Accessibility in Gurugram: an honest guide for 2026

The honest overall picture
Gurugram is one of the more accessible cities in India inside specific bubbles, and one of the least accessible outside them. A wheelchair user staying at a Cyber City or Golf Course Road five-star hotel can move through the hotel, the attached mall, the office tower next door and a booked wheelchair-friendly taxi without a single serious obstacle. The same person trying to visit MG Road on foot, cross a highway without a signalised crossing, or use a public bus will find the city was not designed with them in mind and has not been retrofitted in most places.
The practical implication is that a wheelchair-using visitor should plan the trip differently, not skip it. Base yourself in one of the four accessibility bubbles (Cyber City, DLF CyberHub, Golf Course Road malls, the airport hotels), use pre-booked accessible cabs door-to-door for anything outside them, and treat walking distances as unavailable rather than short. It is a real city, not an inclusive one, but it is a manageable one with the right infrastructure choices.
Hotels: what works, what to ask before booking
Most Gurugram hotels above ₹12361 a night have at least one accessible room with a roll-in shower, grab bars, a wider doorway and a lower peephole. International chains like Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, Taj, Oberoi and Leela are consistent on this; Indian mid-range chains vary. Always ask specifically before booking: "Is there a step-free route from the taxi drop-off to the room, and does the accessible room have a roll-in shower rather than a bathtub?" Both questions matter because "accessible" is not standardised locally.
Pools, gyms and spas are usually not step-free even in five-stars — a ramp or a lift arrives at pool deck level but the water itself requires stairs. Restaurants inside hotels are step-free almost universally. Rooftop bars are hit-and-miss; call ahead. If you are visiting for a wedding or event, the banquet halls are large and flat but the entry through the porte-cochère can involve two or three steps that no photo online will show. Send someone from the hotel a video call of the specific route before you accept.
The airport and getting into the city
IGI Terminal 3 is fully accessible: step-free from aircraft to arrivals, wheelchair assistance available free through your airline, and accessible toilets in each terminal zone. Book assistance at least 48 hours before the flight through the airline. On arrival, the walk from the plane to arrivals hall is 400-800 metres depending on gate; the wheelchair meets you at the aircraft door. Immigration and customs have accessible counters that move faster than the main queue.
For the transfer into Gurugram, the accessible options are: a hotel car with a driver who can handle a wheelchair as luggage (all five-stars do this on request), or a pre-booked wheelchair-accessible taxi through the EzyMov service, or the airport's own wheelchair-accessible cabs bookable at the ground transport desk. Uber and Ola do not have wheelchair-accessible vehicles as a routine category in Gurugram; you will get a sedan and need to transfer with the chair going in the boot. The Airport Express metro is step-free from platform to street, but crowd density at rush hour is uncomfortable.
Malls, restaurants and the accessibility bubble
DLF CyberHub, Ambience Mall, DLF Mall of India (technically Noida but close), MGF Metropolitan and Sahara Mall are all fully accessible: step-free entrances, working lifts, accessible toilets on multiple floors, wide aisles and clear signage. Restaurants inside these malls are almost all step-free with accessible seating. This is where a wheelchair user can spend an entire day and eat three meals without hitting a barrier. Cinemas at PVR and INOX in these malls have designated wheelchair positions in each auditorium.
Standalone restaurants outside the malls, especially in Sector 29 and along Golf Course Road, are inconsistent. Many have a step or two at the entrance, narrow doorways, or upstairs seating only. Call ahead; the answer to "is your restaurant wheelchair accessible" is usually honest, if sometimes optimistic about the definition. If in doubt, choose the mall version of the same brand — Farzi Café at CyberHub is accessible; the standalone branches are variable. This is not the interesting food advice but it is the reliable one.
Streets, footpaths and crossings
Gurugram footpaths are a patchwork. New stretches along Golf Course Road and inside DLF Phases have kerb ramps, tactile paving and continuous surfaces. Old stretches in Sector 14, Old Gurugram and along most of MG Road have broken tiles, sudden 20 cm drops, poles in the middle of the walkway, and vendor stalls occupying the walkable width. Even fully mobile visitors walk in the road half the time; a wheelchair user simply cannot. Plan trips as taxi door to indoor destination, not as walking with a taxi at each end.
Road crossings are the harder problem. Signalised pedestrian crossings exist at major junctions but drivers do not always stop, and the light gives 20-25 seconds for what is often eight lanes of traffic. Foot overbridges near metro stations have lifts in theory that are often out of service in practice. The two workable strategies are: cross with a large group of pedestrians so drivers must stop, or take a ₹190 Uber for the 400 metres rather than trying to cross on foot. The second is not defeat, it is realism.
Metro, buses and public transport
The Delhi Metro Yellow Line and the Rapid Metro are both step-free from street to platform via lifts at every station, with a gap between platform and train that is manageable for most wheelchairs. Assistance is available on request at station control rooms; ask 20 minutes before you want to travel. The first carriage of every Delhi Metro train has priority seating and wheelchair positions. Off-peak (11am-4pm) is significantly less crowded and the practical window for accessible metro use.
City buses in Gurugram are not accessible: high floors, no ramps, no wheelchair positions, and stops without kerbs or shelters. Do not plan to use them. Autorickshaws are also not accessible and cannot safely carry a wheelchair. E-rickshaws at metro stations can sometimes take a folded chair for a short last-mile hop if the user can transfer to a seat, but this is case by case. The clean answer for public transport is: metro yes with planning, everything else no.
Sightseeing and day trips
Delhi's major monuments vary widely. Humayun's Tomb is largely accessible with ramps to the main plinth and accessible toilets near the entrance; the Qutub Minar complex is partly accessible with grassy paths and one ramped route; the Red Fort has a long walk from the entrance to the main buildings with cobbles and gravel throughout, difficult for most wheelchairs. India Gate and the Rajpath area are flat and paved but pedestrian access can involve long distances from the nearest drop-off. Book a knowledgeable driver who has done the route with a wheelchair before.
Day trips to Neemrana are accessible to the hotel restaurant and gardens but the fort's upper terraces involve unavoidable steps. Sariska National Park is a jeep safari, and the jeeps require a step-up transfer — possible with help, not comfortable for many users. Alwar's city palace has stepped entries throughout. The most successful accessible day trip is probably the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary west of Gurugram, where the main walking loop is paved and flat for about 3 km with birdwatching platforms at accessible height.

Inside the accessibility bubble described above, yes: lifts, ramps, seated restaurants, air conditioning, and hotel-based excursions work well. Outside it, distances are longer than they look and pavements are unpredictable. Base yourself in a Cyber City or Golf Course Road hotel with a good concierge, use taxis liberally, and treat walking as recreation rather than transport.
