Gurugram has more accessible infrastructure than most Indian cities and less than any Western equivalent — here are the 6 things that actually work and the 4 that do not.

The malls are the accessible baseline

If you have mobility needs, the newer malls are the most accessible spaces in Gurugram — this is where the city works best. Ambience Mall, DLF Cyber Hub, MGF Metropolitan, Airia Mall and DLF Mega Mall all have step-free entrances, working lifts on multiple floors, accessible toilets on at least one floor (usually the ground or first), and marked disabled parking within 30 metres of entry. Distances inside malls are long — Ambience is over 2 km end-to-end — but the surfaces are flat and rest points are frequent.

What to check before you commit a day to any single mall. Lifts do fail; the emergency contact is usually mall security at a marked point every 50 metres. Accessible toilets are sometimes locked and require a request at a nearby customer-service desk — factor in a 10-minute detour. Weekend crowds (Friday evening through Sunday) make wheelchair navigation genuinely hard; go on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons if you can. And Cyber Hub, despite being outdoor, has fully step-free pathways and ramps at every restaurant entrance — treat it like a mall for planning purposes.

The metro: works if you plan the station

The Delhi Metro Yellow Line, which serves Gurugram at Sikanderpur, MG Road, Sultanpur, Guru Dronacharya, and Huda City Centre, was built with accessibility in mind. Every station has lifts from street to concourse and concourse to platform, tactile paving for visually impaired passengers, and a dedicated coach on each train. Staff at the customer service desk near the entrance will assist with getting through gates and onto trains if you ask — allow 5-10 minutes extra.

The catch is the Rapid Metro. It has lifts at most stations but the walkway between Rapid Metro and Yellow Line at Sikanderpur is long, has some level changes, and is not always signposted for step-free routing. Ask a staff member at the interchange point rather than trying to navigate it from memory. Also worth knowing: trains during rush hour (8-10am, 6-8pm) are so crowded that wheelchair access to the dedicated coach is effectively impossible. Travel between 10:30am and 5:30pm when carriages have space to manoeuvre.

Hotels: what to book, what to ask

The international-brand five-stars — Trident Gurgaon, Grand Hyatt Gurgaon, The Oberoi Gurgaon, The Leela Ambience, Hyatt Regency Gurgaon, Hilton Gurugram Baani City Centre, Crowne Plaza Gurgaon, The Westin Gurgaon — all have designated accessible rooms with roll-in showers, grab bars, and wider doorways. Book directly with the hotel (not through a third-party site) and confirm the specific room type is held, because the accessible room count is small (usually 2-4 per property) and gets reallocated fast.

Mid-tier hotels are a mixed picture. Some Holiday Inn Gurugram, DoubleTree by Hilton Gurgaon and Radisson Gurugram Sohna Road properties have accessible rooms; ask specifically about roll-in showers versus baths with grab bars. Boutique hotels and long-stay serviced apartments frequently have step-free access to reception but no true accessible rooms. Airport hotels vary — Centaur Hotel IGI Airport is older and has limited accessibility; newer airport-area properties are better. Always confirm in writing before booking, and ask for a photo of the specific room if the property looks uncertain.

Taxis and airport transfer: mostly manageable

Standard Uber and Ola cars are sedans (Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent) with tight rear doors and no wheelchair lift capability. For a folded manual wheelchair plus a passenger who can transfer to a car seat, this works. For a powered wheelchair or a passenger who cannot transfer, you need a bigger vehicle — Uber XL or Ola SUV gives you a Toyota Innova or similar with more room, usually available with 15-20 minutes' notice.

Fully accessible wheelchair-lift-equipped taxis are not a routine service in Gurugram. If you need one, book through a specialised operator like Ezy Mov (which runs a small fleet of accessible vehicles in Delhi-NCR) 24-48 hours in advance, or ask your hotel concierge to arrange a private vehicle with a driver who has been briefed. The airport itself is genuinely accessible — IGI T3 has wheelchair assistance, accessible toilets, step-free routes throughout, and the pickup/drop-off structure has designated bays with kerb ramps.

Restaurants and bars: patchy but improving

Restaurants inside malls (Cyber Hub, Ambience Mall, Sector 29 dining strips) are the safe bets — step-free entries, wider tables, accessible toilets nearby. Standalone restaurants in DLF Phase 1-4 and along Golf Course Road vary wildly; some newer places have step-free entries and clear space between tables, others have three steps up to the door and no space to manoeuvre. Google Maps photos help; a phone call to the restaurant helps more.

Street food is very hard to access, honestly. The Sadar Bazaar chaat stalls, the Sector 14 food carts, and most Old Gurugram vendors are on uneven pavements with steps, narrow gaps and no seating. The workaround is to visit a hotel that runs a curated street-food-inspired menu (Soda Bottle Opener Wala at Cyber Hub, or the chaat station at Grand Hyatt's Sunday brunch) — you get the food without the surfaces. Not the same experience, but a real one, and better than skipping it entirely.

The Aravalli parks: partially accessible

Aravalli Biodiversity Park has a main paved entry road for about 500 metres and a couple of gentler dirt trails near the entrance that a robust wheelchair or a walker can manage in dry weather. Beyond that, the deeper trails are rough dirt with roots and rocks — not accessible. Sultanpur National Park's main path is paved for the first 300 metres from the entry gate to the first watchtower; from there the loop trail is compacted earth that varies with the season and is uneven in patches.

For a genuinely accessible outdoor experience, the better options are Leisure Valley Park in Sector 29 (paved paths, benches every 100 metres, flat throughout), the pathways around Cyber Hub and the DLF Cyber City campus, and the promenade at Ambience Island. None of these are wild nature, but they are green, walkable, and let you sit outside without fighting the terrain. Combine one of them with an early-morning hotel breakfast on a terrace and you have a low-impact half day.

What still does not work

Four things to be honest about. First, pavements in general are unreliable — level changes, missing sections, and open utility covers make solo wheelchair travel along most Gurugram streets impractical. Always plan door-to-door via taxi or arranged transport. Second, older monuments and heritage sites (Sheetla Mata Mandir, older temple complexes) were not designed with any accessibility in mind and adding ramps has been slow — expect steps and uneven surfaces.

Third, public toilets outside of malls and hotels are usually not accessible and often not clean; plan around this by using hotel and mall facilities. Fourth, emergency infrastructure — accessible fire escapes, evacuation routes — varies by building and is often theoretical rather than tested. If you are staying in a high-rise hotel, ask about evacuation procedures on check-in and confirm the accessible escape route with the duty manager. This is not paranoia; it is what any traveller with mobility needs would ask at home too, and it matters here.
