Free: Aravalli ridge and Damdama

The western trail at Aravalli Biodiversity Park (Gate 3) climbs a low ridge that catches the sun dropping behind the office skyline — free, best October–February when the park stays open to 7pm. Damdama Lake at sunset (35 km south on Sohna Road) is the classic option if you have time: kayak rental closes at 5:30pm but the shore path stays open until dusk. Bring mosquito repellent for either — sunset is peak insect hour.

Entry to Aravalli Biodiversity Park is free, but arrive before 5:45pm in December and January — the ticket counter near Gate 3 stops issuing passes at closing, and afternoon queues form during Delhi-NCR's high-pollution weeks when the ridge is one of the few green lungs left open. Damdama is the better half-day trip if you're not rushing back for dinner in Gurugram: budget 45 minutes each way by car via Sohna Road, more like 75 minutes on a Friday evening when the Badshahpur stretch backs up. A short walk along the eastern shore past the fishing boats gets you clear of the resort crowd. Pick Aravalli for a weekday after work, Damdama for a Saturday when you can actually linger.

Paid: three rooftops that work

Xyng at The Bristol on MG Road is the most reliable sunset view in the city — 12th-floor terrace, Aravalli ridge on one side, city towers on the other, cocktails ₹951–₹1331. Book for the 5:30pm slot in winter, 6:30pm in summer. Prankster in Sector 29 has a rooftop that catches the light without being expensive — a ₹475 draft beer and 40 minutes will do it. Qla in Delhi's Mehrauli (30 minutes from Cyber City) puts sunset against the 12th-century Qutub Minar — a genuinely different photograph.

Skip the sunset high teas some Golf Course Road hotels advertise in winter — they're timed to a generic 6pm slot regardless of the actual sunset, and the view is often blocked by a neighbouring tower. If you're picking one paid rooftop for a first visit, Xyng is worth the roughly ₹300 premium per drink over Prankster: the terrace is unobstructed on three sides and staff will hold a west-facing table if you call ahead. Prankster remains the better choice for a casual weekday drink with colleagues rather than a planned sunset outing. Qla suits a weekend that already includes Qutub Minar or Mehrauli Archaeological Park, not a stand-alone trip out from Gurugram.

For photographers

Rapid Metro Sikanderpur to Belvedere is a 4-minute ride at any time; do it at 6pm in winter and you'll catch the office towers of Cyber City going gold from an elevated angle. Costs ₹24. From ground level, the DLF Cyber City north plaza (outside Building 10) has an unobstructed view of the Aravalli ridge and is where the corporate crowd smokes at dusk. Neither view is going to feature in a magazine but both are more honest than the rooftop clichés.

Winter brings the clearest light but also Delhi-NCR's seasonal haze, which can mute the sun to a soft orange disc by 5pm on the worst November and December days — check the day's AQI before planning a shoot around it. Monsoon sunsets, late July through September, are less reliable but occasionally spectacular when the clouds break just above the ridge, so keep the plan flexible rather than fixed to one evening. Tripods are informally tolerated at the Cyber City plaza but not inside the Rapid Metro, so shoot handheld on the ride and set up once you're at Belvedere. For a third angle, the pedestrian bridge near Sector 29's Hong Kong Street market gives a lower, street-level view of the same skyline.

Getting there without a car

For Aravalli Biodiversity Park, the nearest metro stops are Guru Dronacharya and Sikanderpur on the Yellow Line; either leaves you an auto ride of ₹80–100 to Gate 3. Xyng and The Bristol are a 5-minute walk from Guru Dronacharya station, which makes the rooftop the easiest sunset spot in this guide to reach without a car. Prankster in Sector 29 is a short ₹60 auto hop from Huda City Centre, the last stop on the Yellow Line, and most drivers know the strip by name. Damdama is the outlier — there is no direct metro or reliable bus connection, so budget an Ola or Uber at ₹700–900 one way, or share a cab if you're going as a group.

Where to stay near each spot

If Xyng is the plan, The Bristol Hotel itself puts you steps from the terrace, and Hotel Saket 27 and Citadines Paras Square Gurugram are both within a short drive of the MG Road strip for a night that doesn't need a cab afterward. For a Cyber City sunset at Belvedere or the north plaza, Trident Gurgaon, Le Meridien Gurgaon Delhi NCR, and Hyatt Regency Gurgaon are all close enough to walk to the Rapid Metro line. Anyone basing themselves near Prankster should look at Hotel Limon Near Sector 29 Gurgaon or Lime Tree Hotel Near 32nd Avenue Sector 29 Gurgaon, both a few minutes from the rooftop strip. For the Aravalli side of town, Bloom Hotel Golf Course Road Sector 43 and Qotel Signature Golf Course Road sit closer to Gate 3 than anything on MG Road.

What not to bother with

Leisure Valley Park in Sector 29 gets suggested as a sunset spot because it's central and free, but the tree cover and surrounding low-rises block the horizon almost entirely — go there for an evening walk, not for the sun going down. At Damdama, ignore any tout offering a private sunset boat ride outside the official kayak counter; the lake has one licensed rental point near the boat club, and anything else is an overcharge with no safety gear. And don't chase a sunset on a day the AQI app shows anything above 250 — you'll get a flat grey sky and a wasted trip, whichever of the five spots you pick.
