Sabarmati Ashram sits on the west bank of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad, and it is the city's most visited memorial. This is where Mahatma Gandhi lived for many years, and the simple buildings, the museum collection and the riverside setting draw visitors from across India and abroad. The ashram gives its name to Ashram Road, the main arterial road that runs along the river and links the site with the rest of the city. Ahmedabad itself is known for its UNESCO World Heritage Walled City, and the ashram is usually the second stop on any heritage itinerary. Most visitors come for the museum and the peaceful riverfront grounds, often combining the visit with the Old City on the east bank. The best time to visit Ahmedabad is from November to February, when the weather is mild and pleasant. That window also includes Uttarayan, the International Kite Festival, on 14-15 January, when the skies fill with kites.
