About Kovalam

Lighthouse Beach is the busiest, named for the Vizhinjam Lighthouse that stands on the rocky headland known as Kurumkal. The lighthouse, painted in red and white stripes, offers panoramic views of the coast. Hawah Beach, also called Eve’s Beach, is a smaller cove to the north, while Samudra Beach, further north, is quieter and lined with fishing boats. The town is part of the larger Kovalam–Vizhinjam area, with Vizhinjam Harbour to the south being an important fishing and port centre.

Kovalam’s coastline is rocky in parts, with outcrops of black rocks extending into the sea. The beaches are shelving, and swimming is generally safer at Lighthouse Beach, where lifeguards are often present. The town has a range of hotels, restaurants, and shops along the beach road. Ayurveda centres are common, reflecting Kerala’s tradition of Ayurvedic treatment. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a mix of local and international visitors.

When to go

The best time to visit Kovalam is from October to March, during the post-monsoon and winter months, when the weather is dry and pleasant. The southwest monsoon from June to August brings heavy rain, and the sea can be rough, with swimming often inadvisable. The period just after the monsoon, in September and October, can still see some showers. Summer, from March to May, is hot and humid, with temperatures often rising above 30°C. Many travellers prefer the cooler months for beach activities and sightseeing.
