What to expect at Damdama Lake

Damdama Lake was built by the British in 1947 as an irrigation reservoir and is now the largest natural-feeling water body within an hour of Gurugram. Ringed by the low Aravalli hills, it covers roughly three square kilometres and is the local weekend escape for kayaking, pedal boats, hot-air balloons and rock climbing on the adjacent cliffs. The lake is a good half-day trip in winter when the hills brown out and the birdlife peaks — kingfishers and cormorants along the eastern shore.

The main activity zone is on the north bank, run by a cluster of adventure operators (Damdama Adventure, Camp Wild). A standard package for ₹1,200 includes kayak, zip line, rappelling and a buffet lunch. If you prefer to skip the ropes course, buy a boat-only ticket at the entrance and walk the two-kilometre lakeside path to the far side, which is quieter. There are also several sit-down dhabas near the ticket gate serving strong tea and aloo paratha.

Drive from Cyber City via Sohna Road — the drive takes 75 minutes on a Sunday morning, longer if you leave later. Avoid summer noon (temperatures over 40°C); the best months are October to February. Book overnight tents through Camp Wild if you want to stay; otherwise leave by 4pm as the return road has no lighting past Sohna town. The lake sees far fewer visitors on weekdays and the activity operators run half-price walk-in rates then.
