What to expect at Heritage Transport Museum

Opened in 2013 in Tauru, forty-five kilometres past Manesar on the Jaipur road, this is the most ambitious private museum in the country and easily the best day-trip from Gurugram for anyone who cares about design, industry or the twentieth century. Founder Tarun Thakral built it around his own three-decade collection: pre-war Rolls-Royces, a full-size restored biplane hanging from the atrium, a working narrow-gauge steam locomotive, and dozens of bullock carts, palanquins and cycle-rickshaws. For visiting corporate delegations it makes a serious half-day out.

The building is four floors around a central well, and you work top to bottom. Start on the roof with aviation — the Nishant UAV, gliders, a DC-3 nose section — then descend through railways, maritime, cars and finally pre-industrial road transport. The car floor alone holds more than seventy vehicles including a 1914 Model T, a Sunbeam that ran in early Indian rallies and a fleet of ambassadors. Interactive panels are unusually good, and children get their own hands-on gallery on the ground floor.

Drive rather than taxi — Ola and Uber struggle to find return fares. Aim to arrive at opening; by 3pm coach tours from Delhi schools fill the atrium. The on-site restaurant, run inside a converted railway carriage, does a decent thali for ₹500. Book the guided tour (₹500 extra) if you are new to the collection; it cuts the visit from four hours of wandering to two hours of edited highlights. Closed Mondays without exception.
