What to expect at Museum of Folk and Tribal Art

Housed in a converted home on the edge of Sector 14, this is the life's work of the late K.C. Aryan and his family, who spent decades buying folk and tribal objects from every state that had one to sell. The result is a private museum rather than a state one, and it feels that way: rooms open onto rooms, labels are handwritten, and nothing is behind velvet ropes. For a business traveller staying in Cyber City, it is the closest thing Gurugram has to a serious cultural institution, and it sits fifteen minutes from most ESG-focused corporate offices in the city.

The visit runs through a warren of small galleries. The first rooms hold Bhuta figures and wooden votive horses from Tamil Nadu; upstairs are the masks — Seraikella, Chhau, Himalayan shaman pieces — and a corridor lined with Madhubani and Warli painting. A back gallery holds the textile collection: phulkari from Punjab, kanthas from Bengal, applique from Odisha. The final room shows Jain and Tantric bronzes, some over four hundred years old. Nothing is interactive; the pleasure is looking closely and reading the small typed cards.

Come on a weekday morning when the staff have time to open specific cabinets on request. The museum does not take large groups, so book by phone the day before if you are more than four people. There is no cafe on site — pair the visit with lunch at Sector 29 or the Cyber Hub, both a short drive away. Photography is allowed for personal use but flash is not. Allow ninety minutes; art historians will want longer.
