What to expect at Neemrana Fort Palace

Built in 1464 by the Chauhan Rajputs and abandoned in the 1940s, Neemrana Fort was one of India's first fort-to-hotel conversions when the Neemrana Group bought and restored it in 1986. Perched on the last spur of the Aravalli range 120 kilometres from Gurugram, it is the closest genuine hill-fort to the corporate city and the standard weekend escape for Delhi-Gurugram couples and family delegations. The restoration is scholarly rather than luxurious — twelve distinct architectural levels, hand-cut stone, no lift.

Day-visitor entry gets you the ₹1,800 lunch buffet in the Aksh Restaurant plus access to most of the fort's public areas — the ramparts, the vintage-car courtyard, the two step-wells, the gardens on levels 9 and 10, and the swimming pool if you buy the ₹500 supplement. You cannot enter guest rooms without staying overnight. The fort offers a zip-line ride down to the valley (India's longest, at 1.5 km, ₹1,700) which books out at weekends.

Drive from Gurugram via NH-48 — the fort exit is signposted just past the Neemrana toll. Two hours in light traffic, three on a Sunday afternoon. Book the day-visit package online in advance; walk-ins are turned away when the fort is full. Combine with a lunch buffet and either the zip-line or a swim, and leave by 4pm to reach Gurugram before dark. For a serious visit, stay overnight — the sunrise view from the ramparts is why the place is famous.
