About Morbi

The city's identity is closely tied to the Machchhu, which flows through its centre and is crossed by several bridges. The riverfront has been developed with walkways and gardens, and the historic Morbi Suspension Bridge, opened in 1879, was an early engineering landmark. Morbi also has a notable collection of temples and civic buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the state was modernised under Sir Waghji Thakor.

For visitors, Morbi offers a mix of industrial interest, riverside walks and heritage architecture. It is not a large tourist centre, but its tile factories, clock-making units and palaces give it a distinct character within Gujarat. The city is well connected by road and rail to Rajkot, Ahmedabad and the rest of Saurashtra.

Where to stay in Morbi

City Centre. The area around the main market and collector's office has the largest concentration of hotels, including several of the city's starred properties, and is within walking distance of the Machchhu riverfront.

Ravapar Road. This artery towards the north-west is lined with newer hotels and is convenient for travellers arriving from Rajkot or heading to the industrial estates on the city's outskirts.

Lakhdhirpur Road. A growing commercial corridor with several mid-range hotels, close to the ceramic tile factories and showrooms that draw business visitors to Morbi.

Old Morbi. The historic quarter near the palace and the suspension bridge has a few heritage-style stays and guesthouses, though options are more limited than in the newer parts of the city.

Getting there and around

Morbi is connected by rail and road. Morbi railway station is on the Wankaner–Morbi line, with trains to Rajkot, Ahmedabad and other Gujarat cities. By road, it lies on state highways linking it to Rajkot, Jamnagar and Ahmedabad; buses and taxis are available from these cities. For air travel, Rajkot International Airport is the nearest major airport, about 70 km away. Within Morbi, auto-rickshaws and taxis are the usual way to get around; many hotels also arrange pickups. The city is compact enough that some areas can be explored on foot, especially around the riverfront and main market.

When to go

Morbi has a hot semi-arid climate. The best time to visit is from November to February, when daytime temperatures are moderate and evenings are cool. March to May is very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C. The monsoon months of June to September bring humidity and rain, which can disrupt travel. If you are visiting for business at the tile factories, the winter months are also the most comfortable for site visits.
