Why people stay in Faridabad
Faridabad is a separate city 30 km east of Gurugram across the Aravalli ridge, historically an industrial town with steel, engineering and manufacturing units, more recently a mid-market residential and mixed-industrial city. It's connected to Delhi via the Delhi Metro Violet Line but only weakly connected to Gurugram — the Gurugram-Faridabad road runs 25 km through the Aravalli scrubland. Hotels are mid-market business chains at ₹5705-₹10460, serving factory-visit and Delhi-adjacent travellers. The city runs its own municipal corporation, entirely separate from Gurugram's administration, and is a full city in its own right rather than a suburb of anywhere.
For Gurugram business, Faridabad is only relevant if your supplier factory or client office is specifically here — otherwise the 45-60 minute cross-city commute is a bad trade. For a repeat India visitor with a client in NIT Faridabad or the FCC industrial area, this is the practical base. Character-wise it's ungentrified, functional, and cheap. Sector 20 and Sector 21 are the main hotel zones; NIT Faridabad is the historic industrial-adjacent zone. At 9pm the Sector 20 hotel strip is quiet — a handful of dhabas and paan stalls still open, most other shops shuttered by 8:30pm, and the street feels far closer to a provincial market town than a satellite city.
The one tourist-relevant reason to base here rather than day-trip from Gurugram is the Surajkund Crafts Mela each February — staying in Sector 21 South puts you 15 minutes from the mela grounds rather than a 90-minute round trip from Golf Course Road. Outside that fortnight there is no leisure case for Faridabad: no upscale retail, no bar scene, no boutique stay to speak of. Business travellers servicing the FCC industrial estates or the older engineering units around NIT Faridabad are the realistic audience, and most of them stay one or two nights only before moving on.
Compared with Gurugram's Cyber City or Golf Course Road, Faridabad reads about twenty years behind — narrower roads, older signage, far fewer English menus. That's not a complaint so much as a fact for planning: expect functional rather than polished, and price accordingly. Anyone drawn by the words industrial city and cheap hotels but without an actual factory appointment here should simply stay in Gurugram and drive out for the day; the Badkhal Lake ridge walk and the Surajkund mela are both easy half-day trips from Golf Course Road or Sector 29, and neither needs an overnight stay in Faridabad itself.
Best cluster is Sector 20 and Sector 21 South, closer to the Delhi Metro Violet Line stations — international business-hotel chains and mid-scale properties here run ₹7132-₹12361 in the October-March high season and drop to roughly ₹5900-₹9800 in the June-August low season. Cheaper mid-scale properties near the NIT area run ₹5230-₹8082 year-round but sit further from the metro. Avoid unbranded budget hotels off the main NIT Faridabad roads; quality varies wildly and several have no functioning lift or hot water past 10pm. Verify metro-station distance before booking if metro access matters — some Sector 20 properties advertised as walkable are actually an unshaded 800m walk from the nearest station. For most visitors, a branded mid-scale property in Sector 21 South is the safer default booking.
Things to do in Faridabad
Annual craft fair February 1-15 at Surajkund lake, 8 km from central Faridabad. Handicrafts from every Indian state, food, cultural performances. Entry ₹120 weekdays / ₹180 weekends, gates open 10am. Genuinely worth a half-day if you happen to be visiting in February — plan nothing else that afternoon.
5 km west of central Faridabad, an artificial lake with a 4 km perimeter path. Free, open dawn-dusk. Best October-February 6-9am. Aravalli scrub, occasional peacocks, and the dried-out lakebed itself. Not spectacular but a real change from Faridabad's concrete.
Sector 35 main road, the primary mall in Faridabad. Food court, PVR cinema, standard chain retail, open 11am-10pm. Not a destination — a way to fill an evening if you're stuck in Faridabad for two nights and want air conditioning and a decent meal.
The original bazaar around Old Faridabad metro station. Real Indian market — clothes, hardware, sweets, chaat — busiest 4-8pm. Grubby, cheap, genuine, with stalls charging ₹20-₹80 for street food. Metro from any Sector 20 hotel is 15 minutes.
Old Faridabad, a 17th-century Jat fort now an ASI-protected monument with a small on-site museum and open courtyards. Entry ₹25, open 9am-5pm daily except Monday. Fifteen minutes by auto from Old Faridabad metro station. Skippable unless you're already in Old Faridabad for the bazaar.
Sector 35, off Ballabhgarh Road, an 18-hole course cut into Aravalli scrub. Green fees around ₹1800 weekdays, ₹2500 weekends, clubs hireable on-site, first tee-off 6am. Quiet and genuinely scenic, but only worth the detour if you already golf — no casual walk-in viewing worth the trip otherwise.

Getting around Faridabad
Delhi Metro Violet Line runs through Faridabad connecting to central Delhi in 45 minutes — Sector 20, Old Faridabad, NIT and Escorts Mujesar stations cover the main hotel and industrial zones, fares ₹10-₹60 depending on distance. From Gurugram to Faridabad: 45-60 minutes by Uber (₹1426-₹1902), no direct metro; the alternative is two Delhi Metro lines via a central Delhi interchange, over 90 minutes and not worth it for a single meeting. From Faridabad to Cyber City: same 45-60 minutes. From IGI airport to Faridabad: 55-70 minutes, ₹2092. Locally, auto-rickshaws and shared e-rickshaws cover the last mile from any metro station for ₹20-₹50.

No direct connection. The Gurugram-Faridabad Metro is planned but not built. Current options are Uber (45-60 min) or a two-line metro route via central Delhi (90+ min). For any Gurugram-based work, Faridabad is a bad base.
If your specific client office or factory is in Faridabad (Sector 25 industrial area, NIT Faridabad, or the newer south sectors), stay here — the 45-minute Gurugram commute otherwise burns 90 minutes per day. Otherwise there's no reason.
The lake itself dried up in 2012 after the water table dropped and has not recovered, so there is no boating and no open water to see. The 4 km perimeter path around the old lakebed is still a genuine walking loop with Aravalli ridge views, free and open dawn to dusk. Go for the walk and the birdlife, not for the lake. Best visited October to February before 9am, when the heat and haze are both lower.
Sector 20 and Sector 21 South are the best hotel clusters, both close to Delhi Metro Violet Line stations and to the Sector 20 dhaba strip for evening food. NIT Faridabad has cheaper mid-scale options but is further from the metro and rougher after dark. Avoid unbranded budget hotels regardless of area; quality control is inconsistent. Expect ₹5230-₹12361 a night depending on season and brand.
